Build Awareness of Handling Plastic Waste to All Parties to Encourage Recycling Activities in Achieving a Circular Economy

August 22, 2022

Denpasar, August 22nd 2022 – The current environment quality is still considered as poor due to unmanaged plastic waste that makes us need to find a way out together. The old behaviour pattern of waste management that includes collecting, transporting, and disposing of waste is proven not to solve the waste problem comprehensively.

The plastic waste recycling advocacy and education program initiated by PT Trinseo Materials Indonesia, Yok Yok Ayok Daur Ulang! also enlivened the declaration of the Waste Care Journalist Network (J2PS). Present as a guest speaker, Hanggara Sukandar as the Sustainability Director of Responsible Care® Indonesia together with Danone Indonesia, Bali Waste Cycle, and the Indonesian Cyber Media Union who conveyed the importance of waste management, especially plastic waste through the synergy of each institution. Vice Governor of Bali, Dr. Ir. Tjokorda Artha Ardhana Sukawati, M.Sc who had the opportunity to give a speech.

“Declaration of Jaringan Jurnalis Peduli Sampah (J2PS) Bali Province as a form of commitment to overcoming the complexity of the waste problem particularly in Bali Province and generally in the country,” stated Agustinus Apollonaris Klas Daton, Chairman of J2PS Bali.

Commitment and consistency of producers to plastic waste is in line with Peraturan Gubernur (Pergub) No. 47 of 2019 concerning Source-Based Waste Management. This Governor Regulation is considered as a regional policy that has the aim to change the paradigm of “Collect, Transport, Dispose” by requiring waste-producing source to sorts and manage from sources with 3R principle, reduce, reuse, recycle

In dealing with a complex waste problem, collaboration from various resources including producers, recyclers, and the government becomes very important. This is in line with the purpose of Yok Yok Ayok Daur Ulang as an advocate recycling program that attempts to unite various institutions with different focuses to synergize with each other.

“YYADU wants to keep encouraging the people, producers, consumers, association, and the government as well in recycling campaign, especially unavoidable plastic waste. Socialization and education need to be continued to make it easier for each party to carry out their functions according to their respective portions,” Hanggara Sukandar explained.

Waste-management process from beginning to end always faces challenges that arise in the implementation. From the technical problem when collecting the garbage itself, to the nescience of the waste management person towards off takers or waste takers that have been managed for recycling.

“Our job is to manage the waste that has been collected by the household. But we need a party to take the recycled waste, particularly hard plastic waste like multilayer, PS, and mica,” Anastasia Olivia explained.

However, with technology that continues to develop, has enabled the recycling process of types of plastic that until now were considered difficult to process, like PS or polystyrene. Through a process named depolymerization, each product with the main ingredients of polystyrene will be able to be recycled into its raw material again.

“The technology is currently available in the US and under construction in Belgium. We hope that in the near future it can be present in Asia, especially Indonesia. Now it’s just how we all synergize in welcoming the technology when it comes,” Hanggara added.

The event of Jaringan Jurnalis Peduli Sampah Bali Province declaration is also becoming the chance for YYADU in taking part as an advocacy program of plastic waste management to improve the literacy of journalists and also the public.
